The purpose of the athletic
program at St. Margaret Mary Parish is to supplement the
spiritual and academic curriculum for all members of the
parish. The SMM athletic program enhances the physical development
of the CHILD, promotes a sense of parish spirit, pride and
unity. The program is the most extensive and well-balanced
parish program in the city for both boys and girls. A variety
of sports are offered and participation is encouraged. The
sports include the following:

Band Information
This is the Music in Catholic
Schools full-band program. Students in Grades 5-8 participate
as an extra-curricular activity. There are advanced classes

The mission of MATHCOUNTS is
to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle
school mathematics throughout the United States. The MATHCOUNTS
Foundation administers a nationwide math coaching and competition
program. St. Margaret Mary School has participated in this
program for close to 25 years. Their teams usually place
in the Top Ten regionally. We have also have had teams that
have competed on the State Level and go on to compete on
the National Level.

The safety patrol is a before
and after school crossing guard duty for 8th grade students.
The 8th graders rotate the duty on a weekly basis. They
are to cross students safely at 61st and Chicago, Circle
Drive, and the Overpass. The students also help to prepare
the Kindergartners for dismissal.

Open to students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. The team attends 4-5 tournaments held in the spring. Weekly practices begin in February 2012. Participants are coached in the skills needed to compete in one of the following events:
Oral Interpretation – a selection
of poetry, dramatic or humorous literature designed to entertain
the audience.
Duet Acting – a selection from a
play, acted out by two students.
Impromptu - speaker draws a humorous topic
and is given four minutes to prepare a four-minute speech.
Extemporaneous Speaking – speaker draws a
current events topic and has 30 minutes to prepare a five-minute
speech.
Original Oratory – a speech of nformative or persuasive
nature, researched and written in advance by the student.
Declamation - Student's interpretation of a famous speech, for
example: Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream."

The Student Council consists
of ten members with six 8th graders and four 7th graders.
These students help run the Talent Show and the pumpkin
contest.. They also help with the activities for Catholic
School Week and organize fundraisers like "Pennies
for Patients, " the Food Drive, and The Baby Shower
for Jesus.

All kids can benefit from chess. Kids may see it as just a game, however,
research has shown that chess enhances scholastic abilities including test
scores. Think of it as "exercise for the mind", a fun way to practice
concentration, patience, logic, and mental calculations.
