In accordance with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Charter for the Protection of Children and Youth, the Omaha Archdiocese requires training for adults who have contact with children in athletics, school activities, Scouts, or other youth activities in our parish.  The Archdiocese has expanded the training to include the safety and care of vulnerable adults.

The Archdiocesan Safe Environment Training, Circle of Care, is designed to help volunteers become even more aware and responsible leaders who foster a secure, joy-filled atmosphere for our children and vulnerable adults.

Parent Volunteers

Saint Margaret Mary relies on volunteers to help each season run smoothly.  Every family that registers is expected to volunteer at least twice during home games. Coaching fulfills this requirement, and other volunteer roles include running the scoreboard, collecting entrance fees, and working the concession stand (the Snack Shack!).  All volunteers must attend Safe Environment Training before practices begin. I will send out more information on that as we get closer to the season.

SMM Volleyball Program Specifics:
  • All girls will make a team regardless of skill level.
  • 3-5th grade is fair play. Teams will be balanced based on skill level.
  • 6-8th grade will be split according to skill level.
  • Practices are 60-75 minutes and begin around the time school starts.
  • 3rd-6th-grade teams practice one time per week.
  • 7th-8th-grade teams practice two times per week.
  • Players need to provide their own knee pads and black shorts.
  • Volleyball games usually begin the last weekend in August.
  • We will send out more information before the season starts regarding schedules and other safety precautions.

Look for registration for the 2026-2027 season coming in early 2027!

Track and Field is a spring sport for girls and boys in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. St. Margaret Mary participates in the PAL (Parochial Athletic League). The team is co-ed, and the season runs from March through early May. Athletes are allowed to participate in both Track and Field and Spring Soccer.

The first practice will be Monday, March 16th, from 4:00-5:15 p.m. at SMM. We plan to practice on Monday and Thursday this year from 4-5:15 p.m. at SMM. And then ideally, we will have access to an actual track for one additional day of practice each week (actual day to be determined with Creighton Prep). A full track calendar will be distributed to all track participants.

Track meets are held every Saturday, March 28 through May 9 (no meet on Holy Saturday). Track meet details will be shared later. Parents are needed to volunteer at track meets and will be contacted prior to meets. Thank you in advance for your help with volunteering! PAL Track has moved to automatic timing in recent years, so the volunteer requirements are significantly less, and no experience is required.

This year, we are moving to track uniforms that will be able to be worn for multiple years. Everyone will get one (shirt and sweatshirt) this year, and then in subsequent years, they can be ordered if needed.

I may be looking for a few parents to volunteer to help at our SMM practices. No running experience is necessary. With a large team, we often need some additional eyes. Please reach out and let me know if you are able to help on Mondays or Thursdays. Thanks so much.

Contact SMM Track Coach, Steph Guy, for more information.

Before his passing in 2018, Coach Mailliard (Denny) served St. Margaret Mary Parish and it's student-athletes for 47 years (1971-2018). Head football and basketball coach for all 47 years at SMM, Coach Mailliard also served as head baseball and track coach for many of those same years.  He also served as SMM Parish Athletic Director.  Coach Mailliard impacted the lives of students, parents, and teachers as a friend and mentor dedicated to the ideal of elevating SMM Athletics to a standard of excellence that was respected by all those who played a part in it or who competed against it.  His contributions will be remembered.

In honor of Coach Mailliard's passion for SMM Athletics, a scholarship has been established in his name to be awarded to a graduating 8th grader who most exhibits the characteristics of a student-athlete which were strongly emphasized by Coach to all those he affected during his career:

  • Devotion to SMM Athletics
  • Strong practice ethic
  • Dedication to the improvement of the team and teammates
  • Acceptance of coaching and the challenge of self-improvement
  • Strong character and sportsmanship

The scholarship will be awarded annually to an SMM 8th grader (male or female) who best represents the characteristics Coach Mailliard found so important in their development as an athlete advancing into high school.

Given Coach Mailliard's long devotion to parochial education, the scholarship will be limited to those athletes choosing to further their education in a Catholic High School. The scholarship will be set at $2,000.00 to be paid directly to the Catholic institution where the winner chooses to enroll.

The Coach Mailliard Scholarship will be awarded annually at the discretion of the SMM Athletic Committee in consultation with the parish, school, and the Mailliard family.

  • 2019 Winner: Congratulations to Justice Mayfield!
  • 2020 Winner: Congratulations to Will Hall!
  • 2021 Winner: Congratulations to Quinn Peterson!
